Convert HEIC to PNG before your next edit

An image editor may reject a phone photo even though the photo opens perfectly on your phone. HEIC to PNG conversion gives that editor a different file to work with. Add the original photo above, leave resizing off when detail matters, and download the PNG result. The original HEIC stays separate, so there is no need to overwrite your camera copy.

PNG is especially useful when the next task involves adding labels, marking up a photograph, or combining an image with other artwork. Before you convert HEIC to PNG, check what the app or website accepts. A form that accepts only JPG still needs JPG, and a small email attachment may be better served by a more compact photo format. PNG conversion solves a format requirement; it does not automatically solve a size requirement.

PNG conversion does not improve a blurry photo. PNG stores image information with lossless compression. That makes a PNG copy useful as an intermediate file between edits. However, the HEIC photo has already been captured and processed. HEIC to PNG conversion cannot reconstruct texture, sharpness, or other information missing from the original photo. A soft face or blurred sign remains soft after PNG conversion.

There is also a distinction between keeping the visible picture and keeping everything inside the camera file. Treat the PNG result as a still-image copy. Do not rely on PNG conversion to preserve Live Photo motion, depth information, every color characteristic, or camera records. Keep the HEIC original for your photo library, especially when it contains features you may want to revisit.

For a fair comparison, open both pictures at the same displayed size. Looking at a small phone preview beside a full-size desktop PNG can make the conversion appear to change sharpness when the main difference is magnification. Inspect fine lettering and textured areas, then check the whole photo at the size intended for its final use.

Choose dimensions for the destination

Leave the maximum width and height unset to keep the original pixel dimensions. For a slide, worksheet, or smaller on-screen image, set an appropriate limit before PNG conversion. The picture keeps its proportions while fitting within those bounds. A width limit controls a landscape picture differently from a portrait picture, so check both orientations when processing a mixed batch.

For example, a 1200-pixel width may suit a particular document layout, but it is not a universal requirement. Read the receiving service instructions first. If the instructions specify both a minimum resolution and a maximum attachment size, confirm both after HEIC to PNG conversion. Shrinking a picture too far to meet one requirement may break the other.

• Editing a photo: retain its dimensions and keep the HEIC original nearby.
• Placing a photo in a document: size the PNG for the space where it will appear.
• Submitting evidence or readable text: check small details before reducing dimensions.

Work through a folder of phone photos

To convert HEIC to PNG in a batch, select several HEIC or HEIF images, or add a ZIP containing supported photos. Apply the settings that suit the group, start conversion, and review the completed results. Download individual PNG copies when only a few are needed, or collect the completed batch in a ZIP.

A large photo collection can use considerable device memory. If the browser slows down, split the collection into smaller groups and close other demanding tabs. Keep the page open until the current group finishes. PNG files may be larger than the original HEIC photos, so allow enough storage for both the downloaded archive and the extracted pictures.

Check a representative PNG before repeating the same settings across an entire folder. Include one portrait, one landscape photo, and one image containing fine detail. This quick review catches a poor dimension choice while there are still only a few results to replace.

When the PNG result is not what you expected

A larger download is not necessarily an error. Detailed photographs often need more space in PNG. If attachment size matters more than the PNG requirement, consider JPG or WebP instead. If PNG is mandatory, reduce dimensions carefully and inspect the result. Renaming the HEIC filename to end in .png will not create a readable PNG image.

A white background remains white. HEIC to PNG conversion does not remove backgrounds or isolate a subject. Likewise, PNG conversion is not a sharpening or repair tool. Start with the clearest original available when text, faces, or product detail matter.
